A farewell to my Maytag.
She wasn't a raving beauty. She wasn't the top of her line. But she has served us well. But alas it is time to part with our dear friend, our washer and dryer.
We moved into a home that had a utility closet over 20 years ago. We have an upright freezer and space was limited so we purchased a stackable washer and dryer so we would have room for the freezer. Every time we moved, the stackable went with us.
It has been a good and faithful piece of equipment. Over the past month, the rollers on the dryer have been getting out of balance from all the wear and tear over the years. The belt is starting to fray around the edges. As a result, there are major thump thump bump bump noises every time we do laundry. But we kept debating on whether or not to sink the $150 into it to get it fixed. Then the other night, I did a small load of hubby's chambray work shirts. There was only about 7 or 8 small light weight pieces of clothing. After about 45 minutes I went to get the load out. It was still fairly wet, so I reset the timer. Went back 20 minutes later....still wet. Long story short, FOUR HOURS later, we agreed it was new washer and dryer time. The washer has worked fine, but we figure if one is going, the other will soon follow.
I went to town and ordered a new set last night. I still need a stackable set since that is all that will fit in my laundry area. But I'm fine with that since that is all I have used for 20 plus years. I am not filling the normal excitement that a woman usually feels with new appliances. We will just have to see how I feel when the new set arrives.
Do you remember the old Maytag commercials where the poor repair guy sat around with nothing to do because Maytag was "the dependability people". It's apparently true since we have not even replace a water hose, a dryer cord, or had to oil, grease or adjust anything on this set. Since Whirlpool bought out the Maytag line, I bought a new Whirlpool set. We see how it goes. But in the meantime, I feel as sad as the Maytag man.
